Why You Should Sleep Naked

Pajamas come in all sizes, colors, and prices, but the best nightwear is absolutely free of everything.

Even if it does not become your next habit, sleeping naked every once in a while, has an untold number of physiological and psychological benefits.

1. Improves Quality of Sleep

To help fall asleep faster and stay in deep sleep longer, temperature plays an important role.

Between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimal temperature for your bedroom, as suggested by The National Sleep Foundation. A room too hot or too cold can potentially interrupt your REM sleep, and the simplest way to cool your body down is to strip down.

“When we wear bulky clothing, we can have trouble cooling off easily if we get hot at night,” says sleep specialist Dr. W. Christopher Winter, author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How To Fix It. “Being naked facilitates easier temperature regulation…just pull up the blanket!”

2. Promotes Better Overall Health

Get forty winks and lose forty pounds, because a study conducted by the UK National Institutes of Health found that sleeping in colder rooms increases the body’s metabolism during the day, which aids in weight loss. When exposed to mild cold, the body produces more brown fat, which generates heat by burning calories.

In addition to keeping cool and keeping the weight off, sleeping nude also reduces the likelihood of yeast or fungal infections. Sweaty underwear is a breeding ground for bacteria, so removing nightwear allows genitals to air out, and simultaneously gets rid of irritation.

Blood circulation also improves without the restriction of clothes, which is beneficial for the heart, muscles, skin, and immune system.

Men should forgo clothes at night if they are trying to have a baby, because according to a study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Maryland, and Stanford University, men who wore boxers during the day and slept naked had both higher a quantity and quality of sperm compared with men who wore underwear during the day and night.

3. Improves Relationship

In a similar vein, sleeping naked with your partner can bring you closer together both physically and psychologically. Skin-to-skin contact releases oxytocin – the “love hormone”- and boosts feelings of intimacy and bonding.

There is also the added convenience and encouragement of already being undressed for any sexual encounters, which further strengthens the relationship.

4. Builds Confidence

There is one other person you should show more love to, and that is yourself. Spending time naked, even asleep, makes you more comfortable in your own skin and can lead to a more positive body image and greater self-esteem.

5. Saves Money

Perhaps the most important to some, sleeping in the buff can help save a pretty penny by eliminating the need to buy new or replacement nightwear, or to blast the air conditioner during the summer since your body will be cooler without clothes already.

At the end of the day (literally), sleeping naked is entirely your choice. If you do not want to, then don’t. Instead, wear loose and breathable pajamas to reap similar benefits.
