Recently, I have had many of my friends tell me that they feel they don’t have enough time in the day for personal reflection and appreciation. In my opinion, creating a skincare plan is a great way to be productive while simultaneously giving yourself some crucial ‘me time’.
Here are 5 steps you can take to begin a strong and mental-health driven skincare routine.
1. Cleanse
The first step to any great skincare routine is a good cleanser. It is observed by dermatologists that you should spend about 60 seconds washing the face. This initial cleanse will help you to free your skin of any makeup or dirt residue that has built up over the day.
In the morning, this step can help you to feel refreshed and more alert. At night, it is smart to double-cleanse (cleanse the skin twice) so that you can ensure complete cleanliness of the skin. During this step, you can allow your mind to go blank, and give yourself time to just appreciate the cleansing and your existence.
2. Tone your skin!
Toners are great as they can be used to balance the pH of the skin and deliver crucial ingredients to the epidermis. If you’re like me and you struggle with more acne-prone skin, toners can also be a great way to help to clarify the skin.
In this step, you can allow yourself to reflect on your goals and objectives or the outcomes of the day. If you’re just starting the day, what would you like to accomplish? If you’re getting ready for bed, what did you accomplish today? Attempt to focus on the positives.
3. Use a serum.
Serums are important for individuals who are looking to incorporate a step that will specifically target a particular skin concern. These concerns can range anywhere from aging skin to acne to dullness.
Many people find that Vitamin C Serums are very beneficial in improving the radiance and general appearance of the skin. While applying your serum, you can consider the possibility of improving your mental health.
Ask yourself what you could do to strengthen this muscle. Are there points in your day that do damage to your mental health? What might you be able to do to stop this?
4. Moisturize
Moisturizing is an important step for everyone, regardless of the dryness of your skin. There are moisturizers made for every type of skin, including for those who have oily skin.
Some people with combination skin will decide to use different moisturizers on different areas of their face. In doing this step, you are giving yourself a moment to appreciate yourself in the form you currently are in.
Whether you’re stressed, happy, or somewhere in between, it important to show yourself affection regardless of your emotional state.
5. Apply sunscreen and primer.
In the morning, be sure to apply sunscreen. Even if you don’t think you’ll be outside that much, it is a great step towards preventing premature aging and decreases your risk of skin cancer.
If you’re going to be wearing makeup, also remember to apply primer because this will create a barrier between the skin and your makeup and it will lessen the risk of makeup-related skin issues. In this step, you can begin to mentally prepare yourself to tackle the day.
